What is depression?
As per the Oxford dictionary, depression is “Feelings of severe despondency and dejection”. Similar terms for depression are melancholy, sadness, unhappiness, sorrow, etc.
Depression can be defined as a state of depressed mood and aversion to activity.
Why We Get Depressed?
Two hormones that bring happiness are Dopamine and Serotonin also called happy chemicals. When these hormones are not produced in an efficient amount by our body we tend to be depressed.
Types of Depression
- Situation depression
- Clinical Depression
Situational Depression comes when something unwanted happens, such as losing a job, financial crisis, loved once died, breakups, conjugal conflicts, etc.
Clinical Depression is something that has impacted every area of your life and you are trying to overcome it but failed most of the time. Clinical depression usually begins with normal sadness to severe and it is unlike the temporary sadness. It is also termed as “major depression”.

What depression can do to you?
It can ruin your entire life, you will lose your focus, creativity, even your career. Depression can go even further than that. You may start thinking to end up your life. Today many farmers commit suicide due to mental burdens. 10,349 farmers committed suicide in 2018 as per the report published by The Economic Time. The WHO report says “264 million people affected“
However, in this piece of writing, I have listed some of the tips that can help you overcome situational depression and will also help in the reduction of clinical depression.
- Expose Yourself
When you are depressed you likely stay isolated which even makes the worst condition. Express yourself physically by going out, walking in the garden while feeling connected with nature, playing with your pet, striking up a conversation with someone as so on. These few simple activities can be a big help to overcome your grief.
- Plan Your Diet
Depression is usually considered psychological however it is connected with your physical body. Whenever we visit a doctor for any mental disturbance they treat our body by giving the medicine that artificially produces the happy chemicals in our body which our body has ceased to do. Hence, most of your mental sickness is connected with your body.

- Meditate Daily
You can’t even imagine the benefits that daily meditation can bring to your mental and physical health as well.
How to Meditate?
Number one, find a quiet place where no one can disturb you or it should be a noise-free environment.
Number two, sit on your chair or on the floor with your back straight.
Number three, close your eyes slowly and finally focus on your breath while you inhale and exhale. Do this as long as you feel comfortable.
When to Meditate?
Meditation can be performed at any time throughout the day however morning meditation is believed to be more effective due to less noise and fresh air.
- Read Self-Help Books
Reading a book that uplifts your mood motivates you to take action that can be a big help. Grab a book and start reading every day and you will see its effects very soon.
